But her breath caught in her throat as she came upon the regal building adorned with statues that were so close to her heart. Atop the rose-colored creation sat the bodies of two lions. But unlike Patience and Fortitude, wings protruded from their backs. They looked as if they were waiting for the next King to fall so they could fly from their perches and transport him back to the gods above.

Then . . . finally, they were there. Leah stared up at the huge church of Petra, and swallowed hard. Her eyes were wide, her ears were open, and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end as the strange whispering voice once again appeared and pushed her forward.

As they passed through the heavy doors, she heard Gareth’s gasp of awe. Watching him and Kathryn suddenly close their eyes and cross their chests made Leah nervous. She bowed her head but only briefly; not because of rudeness, but simply because somehow Leah knew that the powers-that-be wanted her to stay alert.

The scene was remarkable. The side aisles of the church were paved with mosaic tiles depicting thousands of stories in the carefully laid pictures.

“Thank God you’re here!”

A thin man—to the point of being gaunt—raced down from the altar area and pulled Anippe into his arms. He held her like a daughter in a genuine embrace, and his face was a mask of relief.

Leah felt the card catalogue open and she quickly raced through the images stored inside. The man looked so familiar, yet she couldn’t put her finger on where she’d seen him. He radiated warmth and light, but Leah could feel the fear that seemed to live inside him.

“I didn’t think you would make it through the Siq. The snow has melted but the winds are still vicious,” he whispered over Anippe’s head, staring at the visitors.
